Benjamin Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”  This rings no truer than in the dental industry. With dental caries still a major problem, new measures need to be taken to care for generations who live in a time where sugar is so prevalent. Though filling cavities is needed, it should not be the only answer to what is considered to be as the most prevalent, and preventable, disease in the United States. In accordance with Franklin’s statement, prevention is the key to diminishing the problem of tooth decay.

For years, professionals advised brushing twice a day for at least two minutes as the preventative measure. It’s time to take it up a notch. Since the 1960s researchers have studied the effects of xylitol on bacteria in the oral cavity. Study after study has found that xylitol use is hugely beneficial in oral health.

Xylitol works in three ways. First, xylitol is anti-adhesive—it inhibits bacteria from sticking to teeth and gums. The biofilms can’t form and eventually the bacteria will be washed out. Second, xylitol is non-fermentable. Bacteria consume the xylitol molecule but cannot metabolize it like they would sugar. They then use their own energy to regurgitate the molecule, only to eat another one. And with no sugar to metabolize, the bacteria cannot produce the acid. Last, xylitol induces more salivation, helping the body in its natural cleansing processes. The teeth are left largely bacteria free. In fact, one study showed that brushing the teeth only reduces plaque by 42%, but when people chewed xylitol gum, plaque was reduced by 50%–and that was without brushing. Xylitol also assists in the remineralization process. With the teeth more consistently cleaner, minerals can more readily remineralize them.
More dentists and hygienists are turning to xylitol because they see the benefit it has. They have found that frequent exposure to xylitol during the day is the best preventative measure one can take against dental caries. Studies show that five exposures to xylitol a day gives maximum benefit. Luckily, Xlear, Inc. developed a line of products under the brand name Spry to make it easy and convenient for anyone to get the necessary amount of exposures throughout the day. Spry consists of tooth paste, oral rinse, mints, gum, floss, and even a mouth spray.

Now is the time to help your patients take preventative measures in their oral health by introducing xylitol to them.
