Inspired by the children’s classic Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

The day Dax wore his new suit and gave his sweetheart gifts of one kind

And another

She called him “Sweet Thing!” and he said “I love you so!” and she hugged him but sent the Valentine sweets to the cupboard without eating any.

That night he thought of her resolutions and his guilt grew

And grew

And grew until it became all black and its walls turned heavy, closing in all around.

But a glimmer of the perfect idea sparkled from afar and he snatched it and he worked through the night

And in and out of hours

And almost over an entire morning

To create a wildly tasty treat.

And when he peered into the oven where the wildly tasty treat baked, the cake looked so deliciously cakey, and the chocolate looked so deliciously chocolatey, and the smell was so deliciously…aromatic.

And Dax said, “HA! NO SUGAR!”

And smiled because of his magic trick

Of using a natural sweetener without adding sugar once and he knew it would be yummy and called it the tastiest (and healthiest) of all and made it king of all of tasty treats.

“And now,” cried Dax, “let the wild scrumptious-eating start!”

“Now stop!” Dax said and sent his fork to the sink without another bite. And Dax, knowing the cake was the tastiest of the treats, was sad and wished he hadn’t eaten the whole thing without giving it to the one he loved most of all.

Then, with the guilt forming all around,

He heard a happy sound of his waking sweetheart

So he determined again to make the king of all the treats.

But his doubt echoed and he cried, “Oh how can I–?

I don’t have time—” and he let out a sigh.

But Dax said, “No!”

And he remembered how the cake looked so deliciously cakey, and the chocolate looked so deliciously chocolatey, and the aroma was so deliciously aromatic

And Max saw the glimmer of the perfect idea sparkling from afar and he snatched it again and he worked through the rest of the morning

And in and out of hours

And into the afternoon

To create a wildly tasty treat

For his lovely sweetheart who had just come down the stairs into the kitchen where she found him with a cake

And it was still free of sugar.
