Xlear Addresses Pets and Dogs Xylitol Concerns
OREM, Utah – March 2, 2010 – Xlear, Inc. today issued the following statement regarding the overall health benefits of xylitol. While it is commonly understood that xylitol has wonderful health benefits for humans, there is controversy surrounding xylitol and pets.
Since the release of a report on xylitol and dogs published in the October 2006 issue of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Xlear has regularly been asked about the company’s position on the sweetener as it relates to dogs. Published scientific reports suggest that xylitol alone is safe for dogs; in fact, in one study xylitol was up to 25 percent of a dog’s nutrition for an extended period of time. Despite these facts, there is conflicting information in the marketplace, both positive and negative, and we do want to emphasize that we do not recommend our products for pets.
We agree that additional studies need to be conducted to determine the effects of xylitol, as well as the combination of xylitol and other ingredients, may have on dogs. That said, we are concerned about advocating further studies, as sacrificing the animals following the studies has been the common practice in order to better understand the effects of xylitol on a dog’s internal organs.
Several people have also raised the question about warning labels. While we are sympathetic to our customers concerns for xylitol and their pets, we do not make products for pets or the pet industry. Xlear recommends that dog owners only feed their pets items that have been developed for their pets. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has listed on its web site the top people foods that should never be given to pets; none of which are sold with warning labels for pets:
- chocolate, coffee, caffeine
- macadamia nuts
- grapes and raisins
- yeast dough
- raw or undercooked meat, eggs and bones
- onions, garlic and chives
Xlear is committed to manufacturing high quality, health-enhancing products based on safe, scientifically scrutinized xylitol. We are confident that all of our products can be used without hesitation by our customers.
